TPO Roof Systems

Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) is the fastest growing segment in the commercial roofing industry. TPO-based products have been available since the 1980s; the first sheets for membrane roofing were introduced in 1989. By 1993, the earlier non-reinforced membranes were replaced by fabric-reinforced sheets, the version available today. TPO seam strengths are reported to be three to four times higher than EPDM roofing systems. This makes TPO a popular choice for use on green roofs. TPO is available in white, grey, and black.

TPO roofs are installed in three different ways:

  • Mechanically attached – the TPO roof is held in place by being attached to the substrate/deck using screws or other types of fasteners, depending on the deck type.
  • Fully Adhered – the TPO roof is attached to the substrate using special adhesive (glue). There are different adhesive options but that’s not something most readers will care about.
  • Ballasted – the TPO roof is laid across the roof loosely, secured only at the roof perimeter and around roof penetrations such as pipes, air conditioning units, etc., and held in place with ballast which usually consists of smooth river rock although other options are available.
